About the Kingswood Livery Stables

The family originally farmed in Norfolk. When the farm was sold, the family returned to Sussex, and bought Kingswood in 1970.

Kingswood had been used as a pig farm, the family gave an extensive overhaul to the attractive 18th century buildings to convert them into 20 spacious stables.

The owner’s daughter Janet had ponies from the age of eight, served an apprenticeship in a professional showing & show jumping yard.  In 1971, Janet did full & part Livery, bought and sold ponies & horses, and bred Part Bred Arab show ponies. In 1972, the remaining stables were rented to Captain Ryan Price for his overspill of racehorses for several years. Two friends took over the stables while Janet travelled to Australia & New-Zealand for six months. On returning home Janet decided she didn’t want to do full and part livery; but still kept her own show ponies and horses. Trained as a Therapist and worked in a Health Farm, and then worked freelance with Film & Theatre clients. In the meantime, Captain Price took over all the stables. He left in the 80s. Then we began to provide one of the first DIY yards in the area which has continued ever since.

Some of the stables have been turned into business units leaving just 10 stables with 17 acres of excellent grazing all year-round and giving plenty of acreage for horses to move about and allowing paddocks to be rested.
